At the 2024 Bharat Mobility Expo, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the Mercedes-Benz EQG, essentially an electric G-Wagon concept. The EQG idea has found its way to India for the first time after making its world premiere in 2021. Mercedes-Benz has additionally declared that the EQG will debut in India following its worldwide introduction once it is ready for production. Here is what we currently know about the electric G-Wagon, although details still need to be available.
Design
The internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered G-Class and the EQG share a similar basic design. Although it still has a boxy form, every design aspect is unique to EVs. The spherical headlights up front are still present, but a closed-off and lit grille has replaced the radiator grille that had stood between them. Like other electric Mercedes cars, this grille is square with the lighted Mercedes-Benz logo.
The 22-inch alloy wheels on this EQG Concept are reminiscent of a Maybach; these wheels may be an optional feature on the production-ready model. The outer door protector, which doubles as an LED light strip, is also visible here. The car’s dual-tone appearance, with the top half painted black and the bottom half painted silver, is something else to note.
The rear remains unchanged; however, the customary spare wheel on the tailgate has been swapped out for a tastefully shaped, square box surrounded by an LED light strip. Meanwhile, the bumper and taillights look identical to the ICE model.
Mercedes also recently unveiled a camouflaged, near-production version at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, USA. The alloy wheels and the spare wheel installed on the tailgate had a more realistic design.
Cabin
The EQG concept has an all-white interior, but the production-ready model is also anticipated to come in more colourways. This cabin’s infotainment touchscreen and the digital driver’s display are dual-integrated. The ruggedness of the G-Class and the upscale appearance of other Mercedes cars are combined in the cabin.
The dashboard has Mercedes’ signature turbine-shaped air conditioning vents and a white and silver grab bar for the front passenger. Additional interior features other Mercedes vehicles share include the gear selector, door handles, centre console, and controls for the powered seats.
Powertrain
The Mercedes-Benz EQG’s specifications have yet to be made public because the vehicle is currently being developed; all that is known about it is that it will have a 2-speed transmission, four motors—one for each wheel—and the ability to go off-road. Mercedes refers to this 4-motor configuration as the “G-Turn,” a neat party trick spins the vehicle by rotating each tire in a different direction. Mercedes-Benz claims that the electric G-Class will have enhanced off-road capabilities in some places and be equally capable as the ICE G-Wagon.
